What we do
R-FETPV was developed in partnership with Thailand’s Field Epidemiology Training Program, veterinary experts from the Department of Livestock Development, leading universities, and FAO. Each level builds on the one before, and trainees must complete a level before moving to the next.
Our program
Module One — Basic Epidemiology and Surveillance Data Analysis
Basic
Module One introduces the core concepts of field epidemiology, with a focus on animal health surveillance and the analysis of surveillance data. It combines self-directed study at the trainee’s home station with structured in-person sessions.

Module Two — Investigation of Animal Diseases, Threats and Hazards
Intermediate
Module Two builds on Module One and equips trainees to lead field investigations of animal diseases, emerging threats and hazards.

Advanced — R-FETPV-MS, joint Master’s degree
Advanced
Trainees who complete Module One and Module Two may continue to postgraduate study at a participating university, leading to a Master’s degree in field epidemiology. Participating universities are Chiang Mai University, Kasetsart University and Chulalongkorn University.
Completion requirementAs set by the awarding university — a thesis-based field epidemiology study and at least one publication
What every trainee delivers
- Online learning — self-paced sessions completed at the trainee’s home station
- Four in-person training sessions — classroom-based and interactive
- Field practice — three months applying the methods in the trainee’s own working context
- Two in-person review sessions — structured feedback on fieldwork and reinforcement of skills
- Two in-person training sessions — before and midway through fieldwork
- Field practice — conducting investigations in the field
- Two in-person review sessions — analysis and presentation of findings after fieldwork
- Online follow-up consultation with mentors during each investigation
Learning platform
Online components of Module One and Module Two are delivered through the FAO Virtual Learning Centre, a regional platform used by FAO ECTAD for animal health training in Asia and the Pacific. Trainees receive access details when they are enrolled.
Our strategic direction

R-FETPV and DLD gratefully acknowledge the support of the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific in developing the Program’s strategic plan, and value the long-standing collaboration with FAO — in particular through the Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD) — in strengthening epidemiology capacity at regional and country level.
Deliver training
Maintain a sustainable, fit-for-purpose training program; support trainees to deliver their service work effectively; provide qualified mentors and trainers; review the competency framework and keep the curriculum adaptable to different countries and stakeholder groups.
Use and sustain program outputs
Organize scientific meetings with partners; advocate for government recognition and use of R-FETPV outputs, including publication in peer-reviewed journals; institutionalize the Program within the government structure; keep the governing committees active; strengthen monitoring and evaluation.
Strengthen the network
Develop active platforms for networking and communication among graduates, trainees and mentors; support graduates to train colleagues; conduct outreach to country programs; implement an advocacy and communication plan.
Work across sectors and borders
Continue joint training with FETP Thailand; support countries in the region to develop their own field epidemiology programs; build collaboration with FETPV country programs, regional networks and other sectors including wildlife, aquatic animal health, antimicrobial resistance and the private sector.
